History of Medicine Days (HMD)

The 21st Anniversary HISTORY OF MEDICINE DAYS CONFERENCE will be held March 9th - 10th, 2012.

The History of Medicine Days is an annual two-day Nation-wide conference held at the University of Calgary in which undergraduate and early graduate students from across Canada give 10-12 minute presentations on the history of medicine and health care. The topics generally tend to include areas from Classics, the History of Public Health, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Human Biology, Neuroscience, etc. Prizes are awarded and there are associated receptions and an awards banquet.

Each student is matched with a faculty preceptor (required for Calgary students and strongly recommended for all others), who provides guidance for the preparation of the History of Medicine Days presentation and acts as a discussant and mentor for the student.

It is assumed and required that every student presentation provides some original research attempt, new methodological perspective on the topic, and/or visibly critical discussion following  each presenter's engagement with his or her topic. It is  also encouraged that 2-4 students might present work on a related topic which may be included in panel form. An adequate critical discussant will then be identified by the conference organizers to comment on such related papers. We ask, however, that individual presentation and poster abstracts are sent in by only one author and not by multiple authors.

The Keynote Speaker for the 2012 HMDs conference will be Professor Theodore M. Brown ( University of Rochester Medical Centre & History Department) and the Working Title of his keynote address is "Henry E. Sigerist (1891-1957) and his Impact on Universal Health Care in Canada and North American Public Health".

The deadline for submission of abstracts is December 31st, 2011.

For the preparation of the manuscripts for the HMDs Proceedings (15 pp., single-spaced, literature included in the footnotes, without the use of automatic referencing software), please adhere to The Chicago Manual of Style (Humanities Style).   The Chicago Manual of Style can be found on the following Internet page:

http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html

To view information for authors regarding manuscript submission, please click here.

For the preparation of posters for the HMDs, please be made aware that the biggest acceptable size is 120 cm (horizontal) x 90 cm (vertical). Posters bigger than that can simply not be hung on the poster boards (sic!) available at our Medical School.

There are no restrictions regarding the graphics design. The top row of the poster, however, should specify the title, the name of the presenter, the name of the preceptor, and the insitution of origin. In the text, the following sections should be included: Introduction / Methodology (incl. the sources used) / General Context (incl. rel. to the research lit.) / Historical Narrative (i.e. the pesentation of the project itself) / Discussion / Acknowledgements / Bibliography. Let yourselves be guided by clinical and scientific posters, but make also use of your own creativity to present your fascinating history project in the best visual form possible.

To view the guidelines for poster presentations and the audio/visual equipment provided by the University of Calgary at the Libin Theatre, please click here.  Some helpful, general suggestions have been kindly provided by a UofC alumni student in the history of medicine.  You can find these suggestions here.
